This winter semester in 2022 we hoped to help the University’s carbon neutrality goal. We proposed to increase canopy cover on campus by choosing tree species and locations which will optimize the environmental benefits. We also wanted to find a way to increase campus engagement with sustainable efforts, so we brainstormed ideas to involve students with our project. To begin our research, we met with various organizations and teams that are involved in increasing canopy cover in Southeast Michigan such as A2GOV, UM Flint Sustainability Committee, FordC3 Sustainability Project (UM-Dearborn), and OCS (UM-Ann Arbor). With our insight, we planned to host a student tree-planting event in Ann Arbor in Fall 2022 where student organizations can make a tangible impact on the University’s carbon neutrality goals and learn about environmental justice. To fund our project, we applied to and received funds from the Planet Blue Student Innovation Fund and will begin planning and executing our event this summer.
